Phthalic Anhydride in Basic Chemistry useful information

Product Name : Phthalic Anhydride

Synonyms : 1,3-Isobenzofuranidone; 1,3-Dioxophthalan; Phthalandione; 1,3 Phthalandione; 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid anhydride; Phthalic acid anhydride; 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic anhydride; 1,3-dihydro-1,3-dioxoisobenzofuran;

Brief History : Phthalic anhydride was first reported by the French chemist Auguste Laurent in 1836.

About the Product : Phthalic anhydride, an organic compound, is the anhydride of phthalic acid. It is a white crystalline solid. It is an important industrial chemical and used for production of plasticizers for plastics. It I also used as an intermediate in organic chemistry. The most important reaction of Phthalic Anhydride is with alcohols or diols and which will produce esters or polyesters.

Production Process : Phthalic anhydride is produced by catalytic oxidation of ortho-xylene and naphthalene. The catalyst used for the oxidation of xylene is vanadium pentoxide (V2O5).

C6H4(CH3)2 + 3 O2 → C6H4(CO)2O + 3 H2O

C10H8 + 4.5 O2 → C6H4(CO)2O + 2 H2O + 2 CO2

Phthalic anhydride can also be produced from phthalic acid.

Uses :

    • Used to manufacture synthetic resins.
    • Used to produce plastic from vinyl chloride.
    • Used as a rubber scorch inhibitor and retarder.
    • Used to manufacture dyes and pigments.
    • Used in textile and leather industry.
    • Used to manufacture paints and lacquers.
