In a world wherein natural resources are in abundance, imagining life without these vital resources is impossible. These resources form the basis of our modern life. Fossil fuel makes our life so much easier- everything we use in our day to day life is available because of access to fossil fuels.

We all at some point must have read articles and books written about the consequences of depleting our vast reserves of vital resources. Despite the endless debates and discussions, one cannot begin to imagine the cost humanity will have to pay. Experts believe that this planet’s hydrocarbon reserves will probably last for about 100-150 years. This may seem like a long time for some, but the world’s resources are being used up real quickly and we may not have enough time to reverse the damage. The question that remains now is not whether earth’s resources will vanish but how should we prepare ourselves to prevent this catastrophe.

A world without oil and gas will be on the verge of economic collapse, plagued by wars, poverty, starvation and death. With the world rushing towards this crisis, a number of countries have combined their resources and efforts to save this planet from being pushed into oblivion.

The major solution to reduce humanity’s dependence on fossil fuels is to develop alternative sources of energy. Sun, wind, water etc are perfect energy sources and the key to reducing environmental problems. Every day in some part of the world a new source of energy is discovered. For instance, a number of villages in India procure bio-fuel from recycled rice husks. Algae is said to contain large amounts of fatty molecules, which can be converted into biodiesel. This shows that humanity’s potential is immense.

However, developing alternative sources of energy is not the only solution to this crisis. We need to start using resources judiciously and efficiently. Technology has enabled unlimited access to these precious resources, but using these resources carelessly can lead us to our doom. Energy efficiency- using energy sources wisely and efficiently is the way to preserve earth’s resources and reduce pollution.

Arab nations and countries that are highly dependent on oil will be the most vulnerable in case resource exhaustion. These nations should diversify their economy and establish non-oil sectors in order to prevent downfall of their economy.

Nature has made our lives so much easier and it is our responsibility to preserve its gifts. Rational use of resources and living in harmony will help humanity prosper.
